Understanding the Initial Costs
When you’re starting, there are a few key expenses to keep in mind. These include:
- The Cost of the Products
- Shipping Fees
- Customs Duties
- Sourcing Agent Fees (if applicable)
But don’t worry, I’ll explain each of these in more detail below.
Cost of the Products
This part is pretty straightforward—you need to decide what you want to import and how much of it. Prices can vary a lot depending on the product and its quality.
For example, if you’re importing something simple like phone cases, you might pay around $1 to $2 per unit. But if you’re going for something more high-end, like electronics, it could be anywhere from $20 to $100 per unit.
Most suppliers in China have something called a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ). This means you have to buy a specific minimum number of units in your first order. MOQs can range from a few dozen to several thousand units. So, if the MOQ for your phone cases is 100 units at $1 each, you’ll need at least $100 just for the products.
Shipping Costs
Shipping costs for overseas shipments are generally based on several key factors:
- Weight and Volume: The heavier or bulkier the shipment, the higher the shipping cost. Sometimes, shippers use a concept called “dimensional weight,” which considers the size of the package in relation to its actual weight.
- Distance: The farther the destination, the more it typically costs to ship. Shipping from China to the U.S. or Europe, for instance, will usually be more expensive than shipping within Asia.
- Shipping Method: The choice between air freight and sea freight significantly impacts cost. Air freight is faster but more expensive, while sea freight is slower but generally cheaper.
- Type of Goods: Certain goods, especially those that are hazardous, perishable, or require special handling, may incur additional shipping costs.
- Customs and Duties: Depending on the destination country, customs duties and taxes can add to the overall shipping cost.
- Insurance: If you choose to insure your shipment, this will be an additional cost based on the value of the goods.
- Freight Carrier: Different carriers have different pricing structures, so the company you choose for shipping can also affect the cost.
These factors combined determine the final shipping cost for any overseas shipment.
Customs Duties and Taxes
When your goods arrive in your country, you’ll need to pay customs duties based on the value of your shipment. These rates vary by country and product category but typically range from 5% to 20% of the total value of your goods.
So, if your shipment is valued at $1,000 and the duty rate is 10%, you’ll need to pay $100 in duties.
Example: The Total Cost Breakdown
Let’s put it all together with a quick example. Say you want to import 100 phone cases at $1 each from China to Germany. Here’s what you’d be looking at:
- Product Cost: $100
- Shipping: $40
- Customs Duties: $30
- Sourcing Agent (Optional): If you’re new to this, you might want to hire a sourcing agent to help you find the best suppliers and handle negotiations. If the fee is 10%, that’s an additional $10.
Total Estimated Cost: $180 to get started.
Of course, these numbers can vary depending on your specific situation, but this should give you a general idea.
